Welcome to the Kombat Principle Dojo

Welcome to the Kombat Principle Dojo

"Cry in the dojo. Laugh on the battlefield." Author unknown I’ve always run Kombat Principle classes as a safe space – not just physically safe, but psychologically and emotionally safe too. There are no egos at Kombat Principle, and every emotion, and every pain, is a lesson we learn to help us on our journey. When students come to our classes, they learn to master their minds as well as their bodies, always with the support of me as their Master, and their fellow students as well.   My dream has always been to give my students a dojo – a safe and permanent space in which they can learn the Way, and meet all of their challenges in doing so – the place to cry if they need to, and the place that will fortify them to laugh on their battlefields.   I’m so proud that the Kombat Principle Institute of Martial Arts became a reality on 1 October 2018, when the doors of our...

There are 30 second intervals of squats,...

The Women-Only Self-Defence Class – Exhilarating, Empowering, Liberating

The Women-Only Self-Defence Class – Exhilarating, Empowering, Liberating

"Exhilarating, empowering, liberating – if you’ve ever wanted to learn some self-defence, you’ve got to try Kombat Principle"   We thought we'd explain a bit about our classes for anyone who's never tried them before – so we asked a mum from the Juniors class to experience a session, and tell us what she thought in a blog post…   I have watched my sons train with Master Karl in the children’s classes on a Sunday, and helped them to practise at home, but never in my life have I ever hit anything (or anyone) with my fist. The idea of learning how to do it from an expert, in a way that could keep me safe (or even save my life, at some awful point in the future) was very tempting indeed.   When I asked my older son for some advice for training with Master Karl, he said, “All you have to remember, Mum, is that Watching is Learning” – one of the key...

Warrior Tots and Wai Muay Kali Juniors – Child Classes at Kombat Principle

Warrior Tots and Wai Muay Kali Juniors – Child Classes at Kombat Principle

Training in The Way begins early at Kombat Principle. Even our youngest Warrior Tots, at 3 years old, have the ability to learn defensive and combat basics, and develop their self-confidence, listening, spatial awareness, and teamwork skills, and our Wai Muay Kali Juniors build on these strong foundations.   If you’re new to the world of martial arts, and wondering if this is the class for you and your child, here are a few answers to some questions we’ve had about our children’s sessions.   What happens at a typical Warrior Tots session? There’s a warm up run around the training mat with the other Tots, and then after paying respects to the training ground, they line up in their “guard stances” to begin. Training is split into two parts. Part 1: Master Karl introduces the moves they’ll be focusing on, and each Tot gets the chance to show what they can do. Then, depending on the experience and skill level of the group,...
